Tools for Wechat - A Review
Tools for Wechat is an experimental Android app from Hibino for scanning Wechat data folders. As the files from Wechat are very personal, the app does not require an internet connection. The app scans for images, videos, and audios in the Wechat data folder, and the scan result is saved for later use. Scanned images and videos can be saved to other places, and scanned files can be removed to release the huge amount of space Wechat takes. However, newly received files will not automatically show in the scan results; they need to be scanned again to show up in the results.
The app is still in progress, and some features are not yet available. For instance, audio files cannot be played or saved, as Wechat uses Silk format, which is not supported by Android. Additionally, root mode is not yet supported, which is required to read chat logs from Wechat to categorize files to contacts. The app requires read/write external storage permission to scan Wechat files and copy desired files, and read phone IMEI for decoding Wechat message database in the future version.
